Raleigh paralyzed by 0.7 inches of snow

We were hit by an unexpected winter storm today. It dusted the area with less than an inch of snow and paralyzed the city. Hundreds of kids are still stuck at school and many will spend the night there. We've got a couple of extra kids staying with us too. Folks are trapped in gridlock all over the area right now at 11PM, still not able to get home from work even though they left halfway through the afternoon. Folks are complaining about the school system's poor planning, the county's inadequate response, and the horrible gridlock. How do I know? They're snowblogging it on the WRAL site.

Heh, you might have nicer weather, but at least we know how to handle snow. BTW, it's going to be 70 in Denver tomorrow. ;-)

Hey Dave, About 6 inches of powder today in Toronto and most people shovelled it with a broom. But, a few years back it snowed for about 3 weeks straight and the major called in the Army. So I will only laugh for a few more minutes about this post:-) Brian

North Raleigh got more than 0.7 inches....and the problem wasn't the snow but ice. Handling snow is one thing, ice is quite the sticky wicket.

In all honesty, the conditions were NOT that bad at all. The ice was passable if you went at a decent pace and didn't slam on your brakes. I made it around just fine (though I was in a rental Mazda 3 and not my Trans Am).

I saw people going WAY too slow causing others to hit their brakes and sliding. And folks going to fast not being able to handle turns. I avoided my brakes as much as possible and used the transmission, downshifting the automatic to engine brake. It's tough on the tranny and engine but beats sliding into a curb wrecking a car.
