Dot-Net love child

Andy Oliver is on a frightening roll with his latest rants. Looks like it all started after Andy spent some time playing with Mono, a GPL licensed implementation of Microsoft's C# language and Common Language Runtime. Since then Andy has said that Dot-Net is awesome, Sun doesn't have any balls, and the best way for a Java programmer to help Java is to learn Dot-Net. He has also suggested that Microsoft and Apache hook up because of their joint love of money and BSD. This guy is a dyed-in-the-wool Linux and Java nut. What the hell happened?

Maybe it did not start with Mono. Perhaps something happened at ApacheCon. You know, Comdex was also in town and Microsoft certainly had a presence there. You remember that Andy got very sick with some kind of stomach bug? I think some Rosemary's Baby-like incident occured out there and now Andy is carrying the spawn of Redmond in his belly. He's got the beast in his belly.
Comments:

I haven't changed. You've been misinterperating me. I love Java. However, I love my family, brewing my own beer, driving with the top down and paying my mortgage on time more.

Remeber: An idea is dangerous if its the only one you have. Linux is GPL. I love Linux. If something doesn't change (like...hell at least enable all the modules and see if they compile before releasing a blasted kernel!) it may be stomped. I've LONG been a critic of Sun and their JCP (Java Communist Party ;-) ). I also posted this some time ago. I'm a programmer, I make my living off of Java. However, that doesn't mean I don't play with C/C#/D and whatever from time to time. Heck I'm writing my own Service framework for a project I'm working on, and if I can find a copy of NANT and NUNIT that works I'll make a double implementation!

Seriously the healthiest thing, the only way to save Java (that I can see) is to learn .NET. Heck if you can't bear it...try this. However, if Java is going to survive, something needs to change. Sun can't keep pushing this crap down our throat then it will die. If the VM stays frozen in time, then it will be the next Z80. If smart vocal, visible Java developer's start vocally investigating .NET and making sure its known what we like about it and what we don't, then maybe Sun will learn a lesson and get its act together. Otherwise Java will just errode away into obsolesence.

You know I think you're awesome man, don't be short sighted. Would it kill you to try .NET? If you're on winblows, I can loan you my copy of Visual Studio.NET pro license permitting (I'll have to spend and evening reading the blasted thing), god knows I'm not using it.. Having to spend a month on winblows has been all I can stand. But .NET is awesome....its just their operating system that irritates the crap out of me. Don't get me wrong, Microsoft is morally repugnant...The trick is, Sun isn't any better. Be your own man don't get so religious about technology that you're just a pawn in their game.

I agree with most of your points Andy and I think Dot-Net is a cool technology too. I was just trying to be funny (which always backfires) and point out that Microsoft has created something cool enough to appeal to Linux and Java advocates. Hopefully, Dot-Net will light a fire under Sun's ass and Java will be better for it.

Oh no I didn't take it to offense, I just didn't see anything in your post that showed whether you got it or not... So I wanted to make sure... ;-) I did find it quite humorous :-D.

And more more thing... I'm not "Mr. Blogger" <p/> That honor goes to Evan Williams. I believe he has a copyright on the word blogger ;-)

You'll always be Mr. Blogger Himself to me. ;-)
