JRoller on the fritz?

JRoller has been on acting up recently as several people have noticed. We are looking into the problem(s). We started to notice some flaky behavior last week and system loads were somewhat higher than usual. Some of the additional load was due to a second Tomcat server running some other software. I noticed a lot of suspicious JK2 errors in the Tomcat log files, but that was probably a red herring. After spending some time trying to get the JK2 setup right and upgrading from Tomcat 5.0.18 to Tomcat 5.0.19, I talked to Rick and Matt about taking JK2 and HTTPD out of the picture entirely and that is what we did. We're not getting any more JK2 errors, but we are still experiencing technical difficulties. I'll keep you posted as I try to track down the source of the problem.

Is it related to broken resources link or files/pictures has ben los during igration?

We did not move the file upload location, so that should not be a problem.

Since JRoller has been down the last time, the files/pictures I had there are lost, too. Furthermore some letters aren't shown the correct way which is quite a problem due to the fact that I write my texts in German.

yep, lost my one image, which i managed to get a smaller copy of...now i host the image in my own server.

By golly, you are right. The images are still on the server, but apparently "/resources" is not mapped correctly. I'll look into this tonight. Thanks for point it out.
I bet the encoding is not set correctly on the Tomcat connector and that is why you are losing your german characters. I'll check that tonight too.

By the way, what would be an appropriate way to report issues with JRoller.com instance of Roller?

Posted by eu on May 04, 2004 at 03:59 PM EDT #

heh, at least the /resources are mapped correctly now. ;)

I added an allowLinking parameter to JRoller's Tomcat context to fix the "/resources" problem and added a URIEncoding="UTF-8" attribute to the Tomcat connector. This fixed the "/resources" problem? Blackbird, are you still having problems with I18N characters?

strange, but i do have problems. the latest entries still won't be shown correctly. furthermore there are some differnences between the text on the Edit page and what is published in the blog. i made screenshots: http://jroller.com/page/blackbird/20040505

Is javablogs.com still in the recovering process? Right now I can't even login... :-(

Posted by eu on May 08, 2004 at 02:31 PM EDT #

Login with intermittent disconnections, but a refresh makes you recognized again. Nobody answers in the JRoller forum on JavaLobby, which should be the place to discuss those errors. Sending mails to webmaster@jroller.com fails with a DNS loop error on mail.usermagnet.com . 404 errors on a good number of pages, as if /comments and /page were not mapped correctly. But strangely, page hits seems to be still growing, as if filters were functionning.

Update: 404 depends whether you ask for www.jroller.com or jroller.com .

Yes, Damien we need help - I'm just one guy. I'll add the JRoller User Forum to my daily rounds, I'll post status messages there, and I'll follow up this blog post there too.
Visit the JRoller User Forum to continue this thread of discussion.

All we can do is to report our problems, not much of a help :-(

But it is a start. Thanks for pointing out the utility of the JRoller User Forum and for your patience.

By the way, I may have found the culpret. I noticed that the Roller MySQL connection did not have the autoReconnect flag set. I set that flag and I have not seen any database exceptions since this morning.
