A quick test post published via the Atom Publishing Protocol to verify the publish tool end-to-end.

This is a test post created via the Atom Publishing Protocol (RFC 5023) to
verify the
tools/publish
CLI end-to-end. It is a draft.

A bit of inline
code
and a fenced block to confirm code rendering works with
the blog's SyntaxHighlighter theme:

public class Hello {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello from AtomPub");
    }
}

And some JavaScript:

const greet = (name) => `Hello, ${name}!`;
console.log(greet("AtomPub"));

That's it — if you can read this as a draft in the Roller editor with the code
blocks rendered cleanly, the round trip works.

And yes that's OCLC, not OSLC.

Rogue Gadgets: Ian Boston: OCLC recently launched WorldShare, an OpenSocial based platform that uses Apache Shindig to render Gadgets and provide access for those gadgets to a wealth of additional information feeds. It does not provide the container in which to mount the Gadgets but it provides a trusted and respected source of rendered Gadgets. This turns the OpenSocial model on its head. A not for profit organisation delivering access to vast stores of information via OpenSocial and the Gadget feeds. Suddenly the gadget rendered feed is the only thing that matters. The container could be provided by OCLC, but equally by members. OCLC has wisely decided to certify any gadget that it is prepared to serve.

While reading the feeds the other day, I was delighted to see that the USDA IT department offers support for Apache Roller within the agency, below are the options. Wordpress MU is also supported.

Enterprise Solutions (NITC): Software As A Service

NITC offers a full service Blogging software
service that can provide enhanced internal and external communication
among management, operational and business staff, and the
public. When this service is integrated into a web application,
posted information is shared in a chronological fashion that
delivers a high level of feedback and end-user interaction.

I like the approach and wonder why XML RPC and JSON RPC don't work this way.

James Snell: Step one is to realize that HTTP is the envelope. You don’t need a special new XML data format, you don’t need new security token formats in custom must-understand headers, you don’t need special endpoint description languages that describe exactly how to tell your software development code to automatically generated client code for you. You just need a URI, HTTP, a request message and a response message.

Interesting essay by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff on the huge shift we're experiencing in the computing/tech industry with wide spread adoption of mobile tech, social web and cloud computing.

Marc Benioff: Facebook’s success, as well as the rise of other new technologies like YouTube, devices like the iPhone and the iPad and models like Cloud Computing are evidence of a huge shift happening in computing — and it’s bigger than anything we have seen before. And although Microsoft is a casualty, it certainly is not the cause. This is the fundamental nature of our industry in which every 10 years or so a radical new paradigm of computing emerges. From mainframes (70s) to minicomputers (80s) to PCs and LANs (90s) to Cloud 1-the desktop Internet (2000s) to Cloud 2-the mobile Internet (2010+), we can safely say that the only constant in the last 50 years of computing is change. And no company or individual can escape the velocity of change of our industry.

How I ended up with Apache Roller
"I definitely recommend Roller for everyone that wants to have a powerful, stable and fast blog server."

Sitemaps XML template for Roller 4.x
"Roller makes it very easy by using the Velocity templating engine and exposing a lot of data via model objects

Apache Roller 4.0 theme upgrade from 3.1
"One of the reasons to select Apache Roller as my preferred blogging software was the excellent and free selection of themes from rollerthemes.com"

The Aquarium: SocialSite and Apache
"I'm finally catching up with Dave's post from last Friday... My very best wishes to SocialSite. "

Ya todo est inventado: Socialsite, an opensource social network.
"I am doing implementations of SS for the first time. This software is new, I've been working with this since very early releases."

Collaborative Thinking: Musings on Oracle/Sun re: social networking
On SocialSite "Oracle would clearly benefit by leveraging a distributed model for enabling other web systems with social widgets."

IBM's bid to acquire Sun might cost jobs - The Denver Post
"Sun is known for having a lot of cool technology but not much recognition in the market for it."

ZDNet.com - IBM's potential purchase of Sun: Here's why it makes sense
"One problem: There's a lot of software overlap here. In databases, IBM has DB2 and Sun has MySQL"

Javalobby - IBM in Talks to Buy Sun?
(in the comments) "Sun's energy would have been much better spent investing in writing proper Eclipse plugins for things such as Python/Groovy/Matisse/JavaFX/etc. instead of pushing their own IDE"

Placating people with options [dive into mark]
"Google Project Hosting is and has always been a tool to fight license proliferation. It is only incidentally useful"

tecosystems - Google Code vs License Proliferation
"There is room in my philosophy for file based reciprocal licenses such as the CDDL, EPL, and MPL. While they may create islands of code, some of those islands are very large indeed"

Launchpad, by Canonical
Speaking of FOSS project hosting, LaunchPad looks very cool. Take the tour.

JavaFX, are we there yet? [kirk.blog-city.com]
"With this in mind, I'm pretty optimistic that JavaFX, being free and open, will become the preferred choice for building rich clients if..."

OpenJFX: Open Source sidebar
"Sun is committed to delivering enhancements to the JavaFX platform and to this end will continue internal development
-- hmm... I don't understand the logic here

Open Source and Cloud Computing - O'Reilly Radar
"almost all of the software stacks running on cloud computing platforms are open source, for the simple reason that proprietary software licenses have no provisions for cloud deployment"

Patent Law Blog (Patently-O): The Death of Google's Patents?
"The Patent and Trademark Office has now made clear that its newly developed position on patentable subject matter will invalidate many and perhaps most software patents"

After spending a couple of hours with iUI this week, I've put together the beginnings of an iPhone style interface to Roller. So far, I've been able to do everything I need to do by making a couple of changes in Roller's struts.xml and adding two new JSP pages -- no Java code required (yet). This screenshot shows two of the three screens I have created so far.

Here's another link blog post. In this one I'll explain why my del.icio.us feed is full of guitar tabs. I've been spending some time Away From Keyboard and near to fretboard. Since my 11 year old son Alex is learning guitar I've been doing the same and making some good progress. I've noodled around on bass for years, but never spent much time with guitar. I've always known the basic chords, but that's about it. Now I've finally learned how to string and "sing" at the same time and so I've been looking for good, fun and easy songs to play. Here are the ones I've found so far, straight from my bookmarks feed:

Animals – (House of the Rising Sun tab)

Connells – 74-75 tab

Connells – Fun & Games tab

Costello, Elvis – (What's So Funny tab)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – (Who'll Stop the Rain tab)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – (Lodi tab)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – (Have You Ever Seen the Rain tab)

Cure – (Love Song tab)

Diamond, Neil – (Solitary Man tab)

<a href=
"http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/g/grateful_dead/friend_of_the_devil_ver2_tab.htm">
Grateful Dead - (Friend Of The Devil tab)

Grateful Dead - (Ripple tab)

REM – (Driver 8 tab)

You can probably guess my age now

Here are a couple more kinda sorta related links from the feed.

Interactive Guitar chord explorer
Very nice Flash interface for viewing chords, playing them, etc.

Live review: R.E.M. drives the past into the present
REM "has come full circle, treating the old and new with the same vigor and precision"

YouTube - Connells @ Borders: 74-75
2000 or 2001, in Chapel Hill, NC

I bookmarked that REM review because we attended that show last week. We took a bunch of kids and had a blast. REM played a bunch of their very early songs like 7 Chinese Brothers and Pretty Persuasion. The kids (from 5 to 11 years old) danced like fools on pogo-sticks the whole time.

And finally, here's something here's something not in my bookmarks feed; the Epiphone G-310 I bought for about $230 last weekend.

It's time to catch up on blogging and I'm going to start by going through my backlog of links and adding some commentary, but not in this post; these are miscellaneous links that don't fit nicely into my other posts.

Slashdot | Why Google Should Embrace OpenOffice.org
"If Google really wanted to deliver a knockout punch to Microsoft, it would integrate OpenOffice with Google Docs" -- and pump some money into OOo development

Headius: The Power of the JVM
"And while JRuby and Groovy will probably spend the next few months one-upping each other, we've both proven something far more important: the JVM is an *excellent* platform for dynamic languages. Don't let anyone tell you it's not."

SpringSource Blog - Open Source, Open Strategy
My 141 char summary: open source good, but we need money. we won't relicense existing parts, but we'll GPL the full-stack so we alone can ride it to the bank

Kohsuke Kawaguchi: GlassFish v3 just got embeddable
"GlassFish glassfish = new GlassFish(); glassfish.minimallyConfigure(8080);"

Derby: Using the bulk import and export procedures
closest thing to mysqldump in Derby land

Core team statement on replication in PostgreSQL
"it is time to include a simple, reliable basic replication feature in the core system"

Distributed Caching with Memcached
Nice how-it-works article on memcached.

As you can tell from the links below, I've been goofing around with the Twitter API and JavaFX. The Twitter API looks pretty nice and very easy to use. JavaFX looks cool to this old Swing geek, but I'm a little surprised at the state of the docs and the absence of apps. I expected more after the hyped-up launch last year. Oh, well. The Netbeans plugin is pretty nice. I'll stick with it and maybe I'll be able to squeeze a Twitter Client or at least a Java.net or O'Reilly article out of my late night JavaFX noodlings.

Latest Links: JSF vs. REST

I've been very happy with the choice of Struts 2 for Roller, but I still follow JSF because it's the Java standard. A couple of articles by Ryan Lubke about what's coming in JSF 2.0 got me thinking about JSF again.

Ryan Lubke's Blog: JSF 2.0 New Feature Preview Series, pt. 2.1: Resources
"Previous versions of JSF had no facility for serving resources"

Ryan Lubke's Blog: JSF 2.0 New Feature Preview, pt. 1: ProjectStage
"the JSF 2.0 EG has given a nod to Ruby on Rails' RAILS_ENV functionality"

One of my problems with JSF is REST. REST fans say JSF is inherently RESTless because every JSF request is a POST. JSF advocates say JSF can do GET and bookmarkable URLs if necessary and that's good enough.

Bill de hora on JSF and REST
"JSF is clearly not focused on or suitable for working in the REST style to the extent REST principles seem to be actively excluded from the design."

Gavin King on JSF and REST
"On these community sites that claim you can't build restful application with JSF. I mean it is total nonsense. It is not even remotely true."

Gavin's JSF bookmarkable URL example
In the comments thread of an anti-JSF story at The Server Side.

Fortunately, the plans for JSF 2.0 indicate that REST improvements are coming:

Java.Net TWik: JSF 2.0 Requirements Scratchpad
Mentions REST API (JSR-311) and navigation without using POST

JSR-314: JavaServer Faces 2.0
"Allow JSF application resources to be accessed via REST" and "Add support for REST (JSR 311)"

Unfortunately, it sounds like all they're planning to do is make it easier to create bookmarkable URLs and add some support for the JSF-311 REST API. Why can't the goal be to make JSF applications RESTful by default? Why can't JSF ensure that POST is only used when required by the application (not the framework) and JSF URLs are simple, clean and always bookmarkable.

Here are my links for the past week or so and notes about social networking APIs, using the web itself as a social network, JMaki, Abdera and more.

First, some links from open source projects I'm trying to follow. Check out the JMaki Webtop widget, it looks pretty useful. Now that I've got JMaki support in Roller, this could be the basis for some cool drag-and-drop blog layout. Wish I had time for that; I'm still trying to carve out some time to dig into the Abdera server framework.

jMaki Webtop
Cool iGoogle style portal interface via JMaki

I'm also following OpenSocial and Shindig (the reference implementation of OpenSocial) pretty closely, but thus far have not had time to dive into the code. There's lots of activity on the Shindig list, but thus far there's no server-side and security is still up in the air -- both are pending change to the spec itself. Marc Cantor has an interesting perspective on the OpenSocial.

ShindigStarted - hyves_api - Trac
"a small guide on how to get started on Shindig."

CNET Mark Cantor: Waiting for the OpenSocial hammer to drop
"We all hope that MySpace, Bebo, and others will open up and go beyond the original scope of OpenSocial to lay the groundwork for a truly open world of social networking."

<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/17/kickapps-publishes-api-kit-adopts-facebook-and-opensocial-platform-
standards/">KickApps Publishes API, Adopts Facebook and OpenSocial standards
"KickApps has adopted Google’s OpenSocial developer platform standards and is working with Facebook to adopt that company’s standards as well."

I'm also following Facebook. While Google and friends scramble to catch up, Facebook Apps are getting easier to write, thanks to a new JavaScript API, and easier to deploy thanks to Amazon Web Services.

Facebook Extends Platform to the Web - The Unofficial Facebook Blog
"This is a huge step in Facebook extending their platform beyond the Facebook.com domain and letting people leverage the power of the social graph"

JavaScript Client Library - Facebook Developers Wiki
"Applications that use this client library should be configured to load in an iframe, not be rendered with FBML"

Facebook JavaScript Client Library
"This JavaScript client library allows you to make Facebook API calls from any web site and makes it easy to create Ajax Facebook applications"

Amazon Web Services Blog: AWS For Facebook Applications
"we've teamed with Facebook to collect all of the resources that you need to be the next big success story in one convenient location."

Personally, I really like the idea of the web itself as the social network and your blog as the home for your personal profile. So, I think the new Social Graph API is a step in the right direction, as is the blog-based Distributed Social Networking (DiSo) project.

BuzzMachine:The internet is the social network
"The internet doesn’t need more social networks. The internet is the social network."

Social Graph API - Google Code
Project homepage

Google Social Graph API Released on Dion Almaer's Blog
"Would you like to be able to make a quick call to get a JSON response that ties together a social graph made up of resources available on the Web?";

diso - Google Code
"DiSo (dee • zoh) is an umbrella project [for] as Chris puts it: 'to build a social network with its skin inside out'"

The Existential DiSo Interview on Vimeo
Factory Joe interviews himself re: Distributed Social Networking

And, I'm happy to see support for Twitter-like microblogging in Wordpress and Facebook like activity streams from Movable Type.

Introducing Prologue: WordPress.com
"We’re fans of Twitter around here, [but] while the format appealed to us it really just whetted our appetite for something more"

Building Action Streams - MovableType.org
"framework for collecting your actions from services around the web into one place for you to share back out as you see fit."

Action Streams | Plugin Directory | movabletype.org
"aggregate, control, and share your actions around the web "

And to wrap up: maybe I don't need to worry about the intersection of Blogging and Social Networking at all. Maybe there's no need to following all these APIs. Maybe the hype has peaked and Facebook and friends are about to go the way of the CB radio. Apparently, folks aren't spending quite as much time Facebooking as they used to:

ZDNet.com: Ohmigod! Social networkers just can’t take it any more!
"it is entirely possible that people are beginning to question just how much time they spend socially networking, rather than socially living."

First, some social software links.

BuddyPress — Creating a Social Network based on Wordpress MU
"There is talk of BuddyPress and DiSo essentially being the same thing. DiSo, from what I’ve read so far, is all about distributing your user-generated content first using Wordpress as the central tool. BuddyPress is more about turning Wordpress (MU in fact) itself into its own niche social network."

Elgg: the open source social networking platform
"Elgg is an open-source social networking platform. It offers blogging, networking, community, collecting of news using feeds aggregation and file sharing features. Everything can be shared among users with access controls and everything can be cataloged by tags as well"

Cisco's Social Networking Strategy Comes Into Focus - ReadWriteWeb
CISCO's Entertainment Operating System (EOS) is a "platform that will be used to deliver video and other multimedia content to online community properties" with "social networking and content recommendation"

BadMagicNumber: Shipping software
"Custom vertical social network, with feed integration" - based on Java, ROME and PostgreSQL

The Blog Squad: your music. your friends. your life.
"Social music network" with blogs powered by Roller

IBM demos ‘On Demand Workplace’
"Employees have their own profiles based on content and function. Personalization is also allowed via imported Google Gadgets and RSS feeds" with screen shots

Web 2.0 Can Be Dangerous (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
"The most-hyped site right now, Facebook, is the 'Iron Chef' of the Internet."

Micro Persuasion: Reader Integrates Google's Stealth Social Net: The Address Book
"Google Reader became the latest Google service to leverage the Gmail contact database and become more social."

And second, some feel-good PHP, Rails and Linux links.

Michael Kimsal: Continued sad state of PHP development
"with every release also comes fears of tiny, sometimes undocumented, changes that break existing code, and often for no solid reason"

ZSFA -- Rails Is A Ghetto (2007-12-31)
"If anyone had known Rails was that unstable they would have laughed in his face. Think about it further, this means that the creator of Rails in his flagship products could not keep them running for longer than 4 minutes on average."

Linux defector says RHEL zero, Sun Solaris hero
"Solaris ultimately has a lower acquisition cost because it includes features that users are likely to purchase separately in a Linux environment."

Today, I've got a couple of additions to my powered-by-Roller list:

GMJ Designs : Apache Roller 4.0 Released
"I love the interface and it works great."

Toast Technology Blogs : Weblog
SOA and business portal consultancy blogging with Roller

Limlom.com company blog
Business solutions and J2EE consultancy blogging with Roller

Biblical Recorder journals
Blogs and Baptist Planet all powered by Roller

More about the opening of the Social Networking platforms of the world:

Dare Obasanjo: Thoughts on the Opening of the Facebook Platform
"looks like Facebook plans to assert their Intellectual Property rights on anyone who clones their platform"

OpenSocial API Blog: Let's get this Shindig started
"We're thrilled to tell you the initial commit to the Shindig repository is in"

Ruminating on DiSo and the public domain
"I’m hopeful about projects like Shindig that call themselves “open source” and are able to be sponsored by stringent organizations like the Apache foundation. But..."

And some more about the intersection of corporate interests and community open source:

InfoWorld: Open source and the corporate elephant (FOSS.IN coverage)
Danese Cooper: "Having a well-read blog is the best defense you can have against any problems you may encounter"

eWeek: Sun Open-Source Support Questioned
"The only reason anyone should be surprised by anything Sun does with [the open-source projects] it controls is because that person has fundamentally created an expectation that access to source code meant more than just that—and that is a flawed assumption."

Reg Developer: Bruce Perens on the OpenDS spat
"In general open source is only going to work if you let it be a community led project. Sun has had a hard time learning this, and some of their open source projects have had a hard time getting outside contributors, because Sun has insisted on owning the [project]"

Another batch of social software related links today, but today it's all about Google's new OpenSocial APIs (link to go live tomorrow). I waded through 20 or so posts today and the links below are my favorites. Gotta say, I'm really looking forward to getting the details tomorrow, understanding how Roller can play and seeing how AtomPub fits into the picture -- and I'm assuming it does since GData has been mentioned (see the Brady Forrest link below). After reading Marc Andreessen's post, which is the first link below, I think it's possible that Roller could act as both a Container and as a provider of Apps for other Containers. I wonder, could OpenSocial provide the UI widget API that Roller needs? And, will Roller's rather limited user profile data be enough to allow Roller to act as a Container? If so, I might be doing some late night hacking this weekend.

Marc Andreessen: Open Social: a new universe of social applications all over the web
"An open web API that can be supported by two kinds of developers: Containers -- social networking systems and... Apps -- applications that want to be embedded within containers"

Brady Forrest: Google Announces the OpenSocial API
"The open API will have three parts People, Storage [and] Activity stream. All of these calls will have a GData counterparts"

Fred Stutzman: On OpenSocial
"It's unfortunate that Google, rather than a standards body, is at the center, but perhaps this will outline a standard way forward"

Danny Ayers: Google's OpenSocial coming tomorrow
"Will this stuff be truly open, usable as linked data (with appropriate authentication) or will it still be hogtied within those partners' environments?"

I haven't been bookmarking things in del.icio.us quite as often as I used to, for a variety of reasons, but I still do about 2-3 links per day. So I setup my FeedPoster to post my latest links to my blog each day as a draft post, which I can edit and post later if I want. So here are my edited links from the past week with some added commentary to make them a little more interesting (hat tip to Rafe Colburn).

Atom protocol "features" extension

I try to follow the Atom community pretty closely, but sometimes I fall out of the loop. For example, I missed the discussion on James "Mr. Atom" Snell's important new extension proposal for
Atom protocol features, which will enable blog servers to declare what features they support. For example, Roller could inform blog clients that you can enable/disable comments for each post, limit comments to N days on, "pin" a blog entry to to site's main page (if you are an admin) and more. Hopefully, we can get blog server developers to agree on a common set of features and blog client developers to support that set.

Publishing critical info with Atom

And I had to bookmark James Snell's excellent and important article
Publish critical public warnings on the Web, with the sub-title "Atom publishing can provide a powerful and flexible way to distribute critical, life-saving information."

Sun Portal's blog porlet, powered by Atom protocol

This next Atom link comes from docs.sun.com. It's some documentation for the Sun Portal Server 7.1 - Blog Portlet. I did not realize that the Sun Portal blog portlet uses Atom protocol to enable publishing to Roller. It was developed and tested against Roller 3.1, so it probably does not conform to the final Atom protocol.

What to call Atom protocol?

And finally, folks are wondering what to call Atom Publishing Protocol. Is it APP or Atompub or Atom protocol? Ian Bicking says I’ve decided to make a conscious effort to call it Atompub from now on." I don't have a strong opinion, but I do think APP is to vague to be useful.

Lightweight image editors for Mac

I've got a copy of Photoshop Elements for the Mac, but I really hate to have to start it up when I want to crop or resize an image. So I twittered about it. Ryan Irelan pointed out
ImageWell "the Free and Lean Image Editor". Rich Sharples recommended Skitch, a Web 2.0-ish desktop app that makes it easy to snap, draw and share images from your desktop. I'm on the waiting list for an invite. On my own, I found Seashore, which is a Gimp based open source image editor Mac, one that does not need X11, and it's pretty light-weight. I'm not ashamed to admit, I love the Gimp.

Whew! I've got a couple more links but my lunch break is over so there you go.

Championnat Régional PISTE 2007
By François & Marie

This week in Roller Strong, I've got some status on the 4.0 and 3.1 code bases and note about Roller Weblogger vs. Roller Planet.

Development continues on the Roller 4.0 code base, but we're essentially feature complete and focusing on minor improvements and bug fixes. Allen worked to clear bugs and improve bootstrapping. I worked to update Roller's Atom protocol (APP) implementation to use the final APP namespace URI and to pass Tim Bray's latest Ape tests. I wrote up my
<a href=
"http://rollerweblogger.org/roller/entry/atom_protocol_exerciser_ape_setup">experience with Ape here on my blog.

At Sun, we've been testing the new Roller 4.0 "EZ install" work and doing some additional work to make 4.0 even easier to install in Glassfish.
Manveen Kaur created a Glassfish Update Center Module for Roller that automatically downloads and installs Roller with almost no user-interaction. She wrote up instructions to help others
<a href=
"http://weblogs.java.net/blog/manveen/archive/2007/06/creating_a_glas_1.html">create and
<a href=
"http://weblogs.java.net/blog/manveen/archive/2007/06/testing_your_up_1.html">test Glassfish Update Center Modules.

We're also preparing some 3.1 fixes. All of the <a href=
"http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/roller-dev/200706.mbox/%3c8fb9ac720706302051n59e525d0ua850e48ba5b2a62a@mail.gmail.com%3e">issues reported against Roller 3.1 have been fixed and we're just about ready to make a fix release, which we'll call 3.1.1.

And finally, a note about the project. Since 3.0, we've reorganized the Roller code base to reflect the fact that Roller is not just a blog server. Roller is a project that produces both a blog server called Roller Weblogger and a planet server called Roller Planet. For example, the Roller interface is gone and replaced with Weblogger for the blog server and Planet.

Using the word "Weblogger" reminds me of an
unfortunate incident that occurred back in 2002. Not all of my Roller memories are pleasant ;-)
